If organizations remove junior roles because AI can handle simple tasks, they also remove the apprenticeship path that produces senior engineers, tech leads, and future engineering managers.

The issue is not whether AI can accelerate entry-level work. It can. The issue is whether teams still create enough structured learning, feedback, and responsibility for engineers to build judgment.

A healthier model is the augmented junior: an engineer who uses AI to learn faster, compare approaches, ask better questions, and receive tighter feedback while still being held to real engineering standards.
